Annual Report 2020

2020 was a challenging year because of the global pandemic. But every challenge is an opportunity, and we achieved many milestones throughout the year despite COVID 19-related restrictions.

We used the quietude of lockdown to initiate an operations review and improvement project designed to raise our efficiency and optimize the effectiveness of our support for students. The global pandemic also allowed us to think of new ways of working. We held our first online student and sponsor meeting event in 2020, and we started a new program to donate second-hand laptops to help students to study online.

As COVID-related restrictions eased throughout 2020, we organized offline events so that our students and sponsors could continue to connect and have fun. We held our annual “Take your student to lunch” event in July, and our “Pairing Ceremony” took place in November. Dr. Astrid Krehan, our former board member, also held her third successful solo art exhibition to raise over 215,000 RMB for the education of underprivileged Shanghai youth.

We’d like to thank all our sponsors for your continued support. In 2020, we raised 2 million RMB including 230,000RMB from a special e-mail campaign to ensure none of our students lost their scholarship last year. As a result, we were able to assist 383 students, 131 of whom entered the Shanghai Sunrise scholarship program in 2020. None of this would have been possible without all our sponsors, volunteers, and friends for championing education for a brighter future.
