We are honoured to introduce you to some of our former students and share their stories of hope. Here is how they used their scholarships to build a better future...
meet rousang
In 2000, Rousang was studying Chinese Opera at the Shanghai Opera School. That same year, her father suffered a stroke and her mother contracted encephalitis. Creating a huge financial burden for the family, both Rousang and her sister were no longer able to afford their tuition. Rousang's music teacher applied to the Shanghai Charity Foundation to help Rousang, and from there she was introduced to Shanghai Sunrise.

Supported by her Shanghai Sunrise Sponsor Family, Rousang was able to complete her studies, graduating in 2005, and today is a well-known National Opera actor and singer. She now works at the Shanghai Opera School and is lucky enough to say that she can pursue her passion every day.

tao
Tao joined the Shanghai Sunrise family as a scholarship student in Grade 10. At that time, his sister was dealing with a major illness and his father was injured and unable to work. That same year, his grandmother was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Thanks to his Shanghai Sunrise Sponsor, Tao was able to complete high school and university – graduating from Shanghai University in 2013. He currently works in the telecommunications equipment industry and, inspired by the generosity of his own sponsor, has become an active Shanghai Sunrise volunteer in our Field Visit Team, which involves interviewing families as part of our Student Selection Program.
Speaking at a recent event, Tao said, “Like many other ‘Sunrise’ students, my life trajectory has been greatly influenced by Shanghai Sunrise… Apart from the scholarships, our own efforts are also very important in overcoming all the difficulties and repaying the society by helping more people, which I think is exactly the core spirit of Shanghai Sunrise.”

TING TING
Ting Ting joined the Shanghai Sunrise family as a scholarship student in 2012. She had just finished primary school, where she excelled in music and had discovered a passion for the Guzheng, an ancient Chinese musical instrument. At that time, her family's financial situation had left Ting Ting unable to join her peers for the next phase of schooling; her future became uncertain.
Through the generosity of Ting Ting's Shanghai Sunrise Sponsor, she was able to finish her high school education and is now studying Musicology at Shanghai University. A rising star, she performed to great applause at Shanghai Sunrise's 20th Birthday Ball in 2016, and as the recipient of numerous awards for her mastery of the instrument, Ting Ting has a bright future ahead.
