Students from grades six, seven, eight and nine at SCIS Hong Qiao participated in a two-hour Read-In this past March. The students asked people to sponsor them, collecting pledges for each page they read in the two hours. The participating students read over 31,000RMB worth of pages!
SCIS Changning Campus 1st graders Do Chores For Sunrise

In May, the first grade teachers from SCIS Changning Campus started the ¡°Grade One Community Project for Shanghai Sunrise¡±. One of the teachers read an article about Shanghai Sunrise and decided that it was the Grade One Projects¡¯ perfect match. About 75 first grade students participated in the project where the students did chores for a donation. The students¡¯ chores included cleaning shoes, studying and practicing musical instruments without complaining, making dinner, keeping their room clean, giving massages and helping with siblings.
The biggest donor was Hsuan-hsuan, who gave up having a birthday party and instead donated the money that would have been spent on the party to the Community Service Project. In the one month that the Project took place, the students raised over 21,000RMB!
The students¡¯ work all paid off on June 7th, when they visited Xin Shi Ji Xue Xiao, a Shanghai government-registered migrant school that received the books purchased with their donation. The students¡¯ donation, combined with that of another sponsor, helped purchase over 1,000 books for the school library, which serves over 1,700 students in grades one through six.
At the library dedication ceremony, the SCIS students enjoyed performances by the Xin Shi Ji students and each SCIS student received a small gift, chosen by the migrant students in appreciation of the SCIS donation.
In addition to the library donation the SCIS Changning 1st grade students used part of the funds to sponsor a Sunrise student who is entering 6th grade. The total donation was enough to fund the Sunrise student's education through 9th grade.
SCIS Changning Campus Butterfly Class Cooks for Sunrise

The Pre-K Butterfly Class at SCIS Changning raised over 1700RMB for the Sunrise Library Program by selling food to other students at the Butterfly Caf¨¦. At the Caf¨¦, the students created menus, prepared food and then sold their finished goodies to other students.
The Butterfly Caf¨¦ is an annual event that raises funds for a different charity each school year. The funds raised this year were designated for Shanghai Sunrise and will be combined with other donations to fund a library in an underprivileged school.
Thank you to the SCIS students who have shown that whatever your age you can help those less fortunate in your community.
