The importance and pleasure of reading—it can’t be underestimated. From your earliest memories being read to by your parents all the way to reading to your grandchildren, the joy of reading and access to books on all subjects and genres is a basic right. Reading improves your knowledge base, builds your vocabulary and invites you into other peoples’ history and culture. It is most important to begin this process as a young child. Unfortunately, many migrant elementary schools in the Shanghai area have insufficient libraries or contain books which are outdated or too difficult for elementary school children.
Shanghai Sunrise Library Program offers individuals and corporations the opportunity to donate funds for the acquisition of library books for needy and worthy migrant schools. For the past ten years we have donated over 85,000 books to 160 libraries. Last year, for example, we gave 4,500 books to six schools in the Qingpu, Chong Ming, Chang Xing, and Jinshan areas. The books ranged from Chinese and English dictionaries to fairy tales, poems, and history and science books.
The demand for good books is growing and many libraries still have a poor selection. It is important to continue this effort on an ongoing basis. Your contribution can change the lives of these young children. Perhaps there is a budding scientist, lawyer, novelist, or entrepreneur out there just waiting to be inspired by that perfect book!
Your help is needed now. A 10,000 RMB donation will provide 600 books, 20,000 RMB will provide 1,200 books. Books, the gift that keeps on giving.
