Transitions Optical Eye Exam Program for Sunrise Students
Transitions Optical announced today that it has made a five-year donation to provide eyeglasses with Transitions Lenses to students sponsored in the Shanghai Sunrise program. Transitions' donation is valued at over US$20,000 and covers the cost of the lenses and frames.
EENT Hospital of Fudan University has committed to work with Transitions Optical and Shanghai Sunrise to provide each of the students on the program with a free eye exam. EENT Hospital will also donate free lens edging and fitting services. The children will have their eyes examined at EENT Hospital and get their glasses between mid-March and early June.
"Shanghai Sunrise is delighted with the generosity of Transitions Optical," said Debbie Yang, Co-Director of Shanghai Sunrise. "The free eyeglasses for Sunrise students will benefit all aspects of their lives. Eye examinations and glasses are not something the majority of Sunrise students can afford. The Transitions Optical donation and the generosity of EENT Hospital will not only give these students the ability to see better, but also give their eyes protection from overexposure to UV radiation."
The rate of childhood myopia and its progression is much higher in China than in the rest of the world, but many children in China who require corrective eyewear do not have proper treatment as well as quality eyewear. It is important for children to get an annual eye exam, and wear eyeglasses that offer them clarity and protection.
Children across the world and in China are subject to squinting and eye fatigue from long hours of reading, watching TV and playing video games. They also spend a lot of time outdoors. According to a global survey, it is estimated that 80% of total lifetime exposure to UV rays occurs before age 18. "Because damage to the eyes caused by overexposure to UV radiation is cumulative, it is important to start protecting the eyes at a very early age. That is why children are excellent candidates for Transitions Lenses which offer increased comfort by reducing eye strain and fatigue, and increased protection by blocking 100% of UVA and UVB radiation," says Bette Zaret, Vice President of Global Strategic Marketing for Transitions Optical, Inc.
Transitions Optical has been active in emphasizing the importance of protecting children's vision for today and tomorrow. The company has developed educational programs focused on improving the knowledge of children and their parents on eye health. In China, with the recent opening of its representative office, Transitions Optical hopes to raise awareness of the need to protect one's eyes starting by promoting good eye health in children. |
